Part One: The Early Generations
Generation No. 1
1. Simon1 Sacre was born Abt. 1650 in England,
and died Abt. 1715 in New Kent Co., Virginia. He married ?
Unknown in ?.
Notes for Simon Sacre:
Sometime prior to
February 25, 1673/4, a ship sailed up the James River carrying 201 eager
settlers ready to start a new life in Virginia. Some were able to
afford their passage and would thus be able to start their new lives in
America. Some, unable to pay passage, would work as indentured
servants for from ten to twenty years to pay for their transportation.
Many were single men, younger sons of families with no future in England,
who were looking for a new start. Others may have left for religious
or social reasons or because of legal trouble or disputes within their
families. Whatever their reason, the New World provided the
opportunity for a fresh start.
Among those
passengers was one Sim. Sacre. The man who transported him was Lt.
Col. John Smith, who was granted 10,500 acres in New Kent County on the
Mattapony River for bringing these passengers to Virginia. This
record can be found in Cavaliers and Pioneers, Vol. 2, page 150, dated 25
Feb 1673/4. Land Grants Page 518.
Where Simon Sacre
settled is not known. Whether he was indentured or free is not known.
We do not know his station in life, who he married, whether he owned land or
how many children he had. No other record of him has been found in any
county in Virginia. He most likely settled in New Kent County and
lived out his life there. When he died is not known although it is not
likely, given the mortality rate in Virginia, that he lived much past 1715.
The records of New
Kent County, where he most likely lived, were burned during the fire at
Richmond at the end of the Civil War. Thus no record of his life in
Virginia is presumed to exist.
That he had a son is
presumed from the appearance in later years of one Simon Sacre Jr. in the
records of Hanover County, Virginia.
Child of Simon Sacre and ? is:
+ 2
i. Simon2 Sacre, born Abt.
1675 in New Kent Co., VA?.
Generation No. 2
2. Simon2 Sacre (Simon1) was born Abt.
1675 in New Kent Co., VA?.
Notes for Simon Sacre:
Simon Sacre, Jr. is
almost as much of a mystery man as his father. There are two mentions
of him in the records, the first in 1737, when Simon Secret made a purchase
at the Partridge Store in Hanover Co., Virginia. The only other record
of the family from this era is that on 13 Jan 1737 Margaret Sacra witnessed
a deed from Thomas Evans to William Carter, according to Caroline County,
Virginia Court Order books.
In 1756, Simon Sacra
Jr. is mentioned as making several purchases at the store. Also
mentioned are Eliza Sacra and Jeremiah Sacra. These three records are
all that remain to tell us about this generation of the family.
We cannot be certain
whether there were two or three generations of Simon Sacras. Most
likely Simon Sacra Jr. was born in the 1670's or 1680's and perhaps as late
as 1690. He may have lived into the 1750's but not much past.
The next generation appears to have been born between 1710 and 1730 but
again these dates are tentative.
We do not know how
Margaret Sacra or Eliza Sacra were connected to Simon Sacra Jr. It is
equally possible that they were wives or daughters. We may never know
for certain.
What is certain is
that during the period from 1740 to 1780 four men using various variations
of the Sacre name were active in King George, Caroline and Hanover counties.
These men, James Sacre of Caroline County, Thomas Sacrey of King George
County, John Sacrey of Caroline County, and Jeremiah Sacra of Hanover
County, may have been sons of Simon Sacra Jr., which I believe is the best
working assumption based on the few records we have so far discovered.

was born Abt. 1715 in Virginia, and died 1764 in King George Co., VA.
He married Mary ?.
Notes for Thomas Sacry:
Thomas Sacry (as he
spelled the name) was born sometime around 1710-1720. Where he grew up
and when he removed to King George County, Virginia is not known.
The first mention of
him in the records is from King George County Will Book A Pages 212-214, the
will of William Marshall dated July 24, 1746. In this will Marshall
leaves to his son Benjamin Marshall "...the plantation bought of John
England (whereon Thomas Sachery now dwelleth)..."
Thomas Sacry wrote
his will October 9, 1764. It was proved in county court December 6,
1764. Following is the text:

4. James3 Sacre (Simon2, Simon1)
was born Abt. 1720 in Virginia, and died Aft. 1788 in Caroline Co., VA.
He married ?.
Notes for James Sacre:
James Sacrey was born
perhaps around 1720. The first record of him is in Caroline County,
Virginia court order books June 15, 1765, when he was sued by Charles
Goodall. His sons James and Isaac were already perhaps 10 to 15 years
old at this time. James probably married in Hanover County and settled
across the line in Caroline in the years before 1765. His wife's name
is not known.
The Caroline County, Virginia Court Order
Books from 1737 to 1787 list the following actions involving James Sacrey:
15 June 1765:
Sued by Charles Goodell
14 June 1772:
Plaintiff against Ambrose Jeter
15 May 1773:
Case against Ambrose Jeter dismissed. Witnesses for James Sacrey were
Charles Murrah and John Evans.
10 Sep 1773:
Sued Ambrose Jeter and Roy Griffin for slander.
15 Apr 1774:
Jeter and Griffin cases heard. Both pleaded not guilty.
11 Oct 1781:

15 Aug 1783:
Richard Taylor vs. James Sacrey dismissed.
11 Jun 1784:
John Tankersley vs James Sacre. Plaintiff to recover 2 pounds 10 shillings.
James Sacrey
Sr. appears in Caroline County, VA tax lists from 1783 to 1788. In
1788 his listed with on male over 21 and one male age 16-21. In the
following year is listed with one male over 21 and William Sacre appears
with one male 16-21. James Sacrey Sr. does not appear in any records
after 1788 and it can be presumed that he died in or about that year.

13
iii. Benjamin Sacre, born Abt. 1752 in
Virginia. He married Ann ?.
Notes for Benjamin Sacre:
This Benjamin
Sacrey is an ephemeral figure who has no known descendants. Given the
state of records in this period, it is possible that he had daughters for
whom no record exists. He disappears from the records after 1791,
which could indicate he has died or that he moved to a county where records
no longer exist.
On 9 Dec 1779, a deed from Ann
Sacrey and Benjamin Sacrey to Mary Spice is acknowledged by Ann Sacrey, from
Caroline County, Virginia Court Order Books 1732 to 1787.

Benjamin Sacray is
listed on the tax books of King George Co., Virginia from 1785-1790, then
disappears. He was on the list of delinquent taxpayers in King George
Co., Virginia in 1786, 1787, 1790 and 1791. (Virginia Genealogist, 1976, #20

iv. William Sacre, born Abt. 1765 in
Virginia.
Notes for William Sacre:
William Sacre has been
considered a possibility for the parent of George Sacre (1802-1875) of
Callaway Co., Missouri and Walker Sacre (c1804-1831), ancestor of many
Sacras in Texas and Oklahoma. Because of the early date that
disappears from the records, I now consider this highly unlikely and now
believe that he had no children and died at an early age.
William Sacre
first appears in Caroline County, Virginia tax lists in 1788 with one male
between 16 and 21. In 1789, 1790 and 1791 he appears in the tax lists,
then vanishes.
5. John3 Sacrey (Simon2 Sacre, Simon1)
was born Abt. 1725 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1790 in Frankfort, Fayette
Co., KY.
Notes for John Sacrey:
John Sacrey was most
likely born about 1730 or so, possibly earlier. I have chosen to
tentatively place him as a brother of Thomas and James Sacrey since the fit
is better than making him a son of James Sacrey Sr. He apparently
moved to Frankfort, Kentucky about 1787 and since he does not appear in tax
lists there, he may have died soon thereafter.

Deed from John Sacrey to Michael Aimes proved.
John Sacre is listed
in Caroline County, Virginia tax lists in 1784, 1785, 1786 and 1787.
In 1787 two males in his household, John and Thomas Sacre, were over age 21.
In 1784 he had two blacks over age 16 and in 1786 had one black.
From the Caroline
County, Virginia land alteration tax books, John Sacre sold 50 acres to
Isaac Sacre in 1786 for 1 pound, ten shillings. In 1787, John Sacre of
Frankford (Kentucky) sold land to Isaac Sacre and Michael Aimes.

6. Jeremiah3 Sacre (Simon2, Simon1)
was born Abt. 1730 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1782 in Virginia. He
married Sabra ? in Hanover Co., Virginia?. She was born in
Virginia?, and died Aft. 1814 in Hanover Co., Virginia.
Notes for Jeremiah Sacre:
Jeremiah Sacra is as
ephemeral as Simon Sacre Sr. He is mentioned once as a purchaser at
the Partridge Store in 1756 and is never again heard from.
The problem here is
to determine who was the husband of the widow Sabra Sacra, who appears in
Hanover County tax lists after 1782. Sabra had four sons, Shelton,
John, Charles, and Reuben, who appear in various tax lists and census
records.
So far the only
likely candidate is Jeremiah Sacra from the Partridge Store. It is
also possible that there was a third Simon Sacra, the Simon Sacra Jr. from
the Partridge Store in 1756. There is no way to make a decision about
this except that the percentage is slightly better that Jeremiah is the
husband of Sabra Sacra.
Use this connection
with caution. This is a very weak link in this reconstruction.
It is unfortunate that no records remain in Hanover County which could shed
light on this question.
