Part Two: Generation Four
Generation No. 4
9. Francis4
Sacre (Thomas3 Sacry, Simon2 Sacre, Simon1)
was born Abt. 1738 in Virginia, and died Abt. 1785 in King George Co., VA.
He married Sarah ?. She died Aft. 1815 in King George Co., VA.
Notes for Francis Sacre:
Francis Sacrey may have been born about
1738 or later. The date is a matter of speculation. He appears only three
times in the records, first in Thomas Sacry's will in 1764 in King George
Co., Virginia, second in the 1783 tax list of King George Co., Virginia, and
third in the court records of 1784 as having an intestate estate.
In 1783, Francis Sacrey was taxed on
three horses and nine cows. In 1785, he does not appear but Sarah Sacrey
does appear with two horses and eight cows. The close correlation in the
number of cows would indicate that Sarah was in fact the widow of Francis
Sacrey.
Sarah appears in the tax lists for 1786,
1787, 1788, 1789, 1790, and 1792 with no white males over the age of 21. In
1799, 1800, 1801, and 1802, she reappears with one white male over 21. In
1803, she again has no white males but John Sacrey appears with one white
male. This is an indication that John was her son by Francis Sacrey.
Sarah's last appearance is in the 1815
tax list. There is a Sukey Sacray in the 1810 Census with four females
under the age of ten who might be this same Sarah Sacray.

Child of Francis Sacre and Sarah ? is:
+ 23 i. John5
Sacre, born Abt. 1782 in King George Co., Virginia; died Bef. 1820 in King

10. Thomas4
Sacre (Thomas3 Sacry, Simon2 Sacre, Simon1)
was born Abt. 1740 in Virginia, and died Bef. 1782 in King George Co., VA.
He married Ann Griffin April 21, 1760 in King George Co., Virginia1.
Notes for Thomas Sacre:
Thomas Sacray is another ephemeral
figure. He appears twice in the records, once in his father's will in 1764,
and once when he married in 1760 to Ann Griffin.
In the 1783 tax list of King George
County, Virginia, Ann Sacrey is listed and was taxed on one steed. She does
not appear again on the tax lists. It is possible that she either died or
that she had no property with taxable value. It is also possible that she
remarried.
Child of Thomas Sacre and Ann Griffin is:
+ 24 i. Thomas5
Sacrey, born Abt. 1768 in King George Co., Virginia.
11. Isaac4 Sacry
(James3 Sacre, Simon2, Simon1) was born Abt.
1745 in Virginia, and died Bet. February 26 - April 18, 1808 in Franklin
Co., Kentucky. He married Elizabeth George December 24, 1780 in
Caroline Co., Virginia, daughter of Robert George and Mary ?. She was born
March 14, 1761 in Caroline Co., Virginia, and died Aft. 1850 in Hendricks
Co., IN.
Notes for Isaac Sacry:
Isaac Sacrey is one of the better
documented of the eighteenth century members of the family. His widow's
pension record for service in the Revolutionary War includes a copy of his
marriage information, a copy of the family Bible record for his wife and
children, (except the last two) details on his service, and information on
his move to Kentucky. Following are a sampling of details from governmental
records relating to Isaac Sacrey.
The one major uncertainty regarding Isaac
Sacrey (and his brother James) is whether James Sacrey Sr. of Caroline
County, Virginia, is in fact his father. The appearance of both James
Sacrey Sr. and James Sacrey Jr. in Carline County lends credibility to this
likelihood. No single record states that Isaac Sacrey is the son of James
Sacrey Sr.
From Caroline County, Virginia Court Order
Books 1732 to 1787:
10 June 1784: Deed John Sacre to Isaac
Sacre acknowledged and ordered recorded
11 Aug 1785: Isaac Sacrey allowed to
keep an Ordinary at his house
8 Sep 1785: Isaac Sacrey acknowledged
bond for ordinary license.
11 Sep 1785: Isaac Sacrey to work on
road.
11 May 1786: Isaac Sacrey didn't return
tax list.
14 Nov 1786: Isaac Sacrey gives
Security.
Isaac Sacrey appears in the tax lists of
Caroline County, Virginia from 1783 to 1789 and from 1791 to 1795. In most
years he owned two horses and two cows. In 1786 and 1789 he had one slave
and in 1788 he had two slaves.
From Caroline Co., VA land alteration tax
books, Isaac Sacre bought 50 acres from John Sacre in 1786 and bought 6.5
acres from Francis Buckner in 1788. He is listed as owning 56.5 acres in
1789 and 1791 through 1796, when he transferred all his property to William
C. Woodford.

Crutcher and Susannah ?. She was born May 16, 1762 in Virginia6,
and died Bet. 1820 - 1830 in Shelby Co., Kentucky7.
Notes for James Sacrey:
James Sacrey served in the Revolutionary
War. Much of what we know about him is from his Pension Application filed
in the 1830's. From this and other documents we have a large amount of data
on him and his family. James Sacrey had two sons who never married and
several daughters with a large number of descendants.
As with his brother Isaac Sacrey, the
major uncertainty is whether James Sacrey Sr. is his father. This is most
likely the case, however there are no extant records stating this for
certain. In 1784, James Sacrey (not specified as Senior of Junior) is
listed in the tax lists of Caroline Co., Virginia, indicating the
possibility that both James Sr. and James Jr. were listed together in the
same family.
From Caroline County, Virginia tax books,
James Sacre bought 117 acres from Jonry Smith in 1785 for 14 pounds 5
shillings and sold the same land to Pleasant Tindle the same year.

was born Abt. 1763 in Virginia, and died 1807 in Fredericksburg,
Spotsylvania Co., Virginia. He married Patty ?. She died May 02,
1804 in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania Co., Virginia.
Notes for Thomas Sacrey:
Thomas first appears in Caroline County,
Virginia tax lists in the household of John Sacre as aged over 21. He
appears in the 1788 tax lists as an adult with 2 white males over 21 and one
horse. He appears in the Tax lists of Fredericksburg, VA from 1789 to 1806.
He is listed five or six times with
various stories in Fredericksburg, Virginia newspapers from the early 1790's
to 1807, when he died. From these articles, he apparently ran a school
although its type is not known.
Thomas died in 1807 aged 44 years and his
wife died in 1804, according to newspaper transcripts. He is one of the
best possibilities for the father of George and Walker Sacre, who later
turned up in Kentucky. According to family tradition, George was born in
Virginia and went to Kentucky at the age of seven. Walker also appears to
have been born in Virginia (1880 Census of son Edmund) and was in Kentucky
in roughly the same area as George. Neither George nor Walker are
associated with any other Sacre families in Kentucky, all of whom came
earlier. My theory is that George and Walker were orphans and were taken to
Kentucky either by an aunt or older sister about 1809. No guardianship or
other records have been found concerning either George or Walker.
Again, this remains speculation.

Notes for George Sacrey:
George Sacry turns up in Kentucky at a
very early age, in the mid 1790's. Since John Sacre of Caroline County,
Virginia was the earliest (and besides his cousins James and Isaac) the only
Sacre in Kentucky, he is the most likely candidate for George's parent.
The name of George is very common in the
Caroline County, Virginia branch of the family and much less common in other
branches. In addition, the spelling of the name as Sacre, Sacrey, Sacry is
far more common in this branch. Other branches use the spelling of Sacra
much more commonly.
Will of George Sacry, Franklin Co., Kentucky,
written April 20, 1843, proved May 1844:

Sacrey to have $200, Robert Sacrey to have $100. The money will remain in

John Sacra is in the Hanover Co.,
Virginia tax lists from 1784 to 1817. After that until his death he is
Carline County. I believe he is the ancestor of the later Caroline County
Sacres since he appears to be the only man living there. It is also
